The sale of $1,500,000 in Israel bonds was recorded here tonight at a dinner in honor of Ambassador Gideon Rafael, Israel’s permanent representative to the United Nations. U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas was the principal speaker.
Mr. Rafael expressed to the 1,000 representatives of Jewish fraternal orders Israel’s gratitude for the outpouring of economic aid by the American people during the new Arab-Israel war and said Israel bond dollars would help finance the readjustment of Israel’s economy.
Justice Douglas, describing Israel as “a symbol of democracy in a benighted area,” called for a “rule of law” to assure Israel’s security and role as a “teacher” of under-developed nations. He called the June war Israel’s “severest crisis” and said Israel had “won the battle without outside help and now rests secure — temporarily.”
