17,817 Jews Registered for Emigration to Palestine

A large number of Polish Jews have expressed their deside in recent months to proceed to Palestine, according to the figures of the Palestine office of the Zionist Organization of Poland. During this period 17,817 persons have been registered and approved by the Palestine Office.

Only a small fraction of this number is able to leave for Palestine, due to the lack of immigration certificates issued by the Palestine government.

A plea for unprejudiced thinking was made by Dr. William Mather Lewis, president of George Washington University in his commencement address to the graduating class of the Poly technic Institute of Brooklyn, N. Y.

Among the 98 graduates awarded degrees of the Institute 38 were Jewish.

The Freethinkers’ Society, through its President, Joseph Lewis, protested to Gov. Smith and Mayor Walker against the reception given at the City Hall to Cardinal Bonzano, the Papal Legate and the other Cardinals who were here on their way to the Eucharistic Congress.

In their telegram the Society protests against what it terms “the utter disregard for the principles of the American Government as manifested in the reception.” He also says that “this Republic does not recognize the Papal State nor the Pope at Rome.”

Memorial services for Meyer London, former Socialist representative, were attended by more than 2,500 persons in the Second Avenue Theatre. No. 23 Second Avenue, New York. Eulogies were delivered by Justice Panken and Abraham Cahan, Editor of the “Jewish Daily Forward.” both of whom were London’s lifelong friends. At the meeting a movement was started to change the name of Rutgers Square to Meyer London Square.

At the graduation exercises of the Baltimore City College. Israel Eagle was awarded a scholarship to the Johns Hopkins University. The Z. Morton Katz scholarship was presented to Milton Blumenfield.

The Builders’ Exchange for the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute senior making the highest average in the class was awarded to Samuel I. Katzoff.

Clarence M. Lewis was appointed Transit Commissioner, John F. Gilchrist, chairman of the Commission announced.

Mr. Lewis is secretary, director and counsel for the Jewish Board of Guardians and counsel for the Eisman Day Nursery.

More than 63,000 emigrants went from the United States to other countries in the first nine months of the current fiscal year, according to a report of Harry E. Hull, Commissioner General of Immigration. From July 1. 1925, to May 1. 1926, a total of 63,556 residents left this country. Of that number, 49,300 went to Europe; 9,527 to other parts of the American hemisphere, and 4,253 to Asia. Italy received more than 17,000 emigrants.
