The need for strengthening the bonds of the American Jewish labor movement with the state of Israel was emphasized here today at the opening session of the 17th triennial convention of the Jewish National Workers Alliance. More than 2,000 delegates from all sections of the U.S. are attending the convention.
Messages of felicitation were received from President Truman, President Chaim Weizmann of Israel, Israel Ambassador to the U.S. Eliahu Elata and other notables. President Truman lauded the Alliance for its “humanitarian work” in the past and expressed the hope the organization would be successful in bringing “into daily practice the teachings of the Prophets.”
In a short-wave radio broadcast from Jerusalem, Joseph Sprinzak, Speaker of the Israel parliament, praised the American Jewish labor movement for “preparing the way for Jewish liberation.” Mr. Sprinzak urged the forging of “links of solidarity” between Israel and Jewish communities oversas. Louis Segal, general secretary, reported that during the past three and a half years the Alliance raised over $7,000,000 for the United Jewish Appeal, $3,500,000 for the Histadrut and $1,000,000 for the Jewish National Fund.
