More than 1800 Jewish leaders, representing virtually every community in the United States and Canada, will participate in the 41st General Assembly of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds (CJF) in Toronto. Nov. 8-12, it was announced today by Max M. Fisher, president. The five-day assembly, which is a major annual forum of the organized Jewish community in North America, will bring together delegates from some 230 Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds that serve the communal needs of over 800 communities in the two countries.
Fisher said that attendance is expected to be the highest in the 41-year history of the assembly, with delegations from France and Israel as well as participation by other overseas dignitaries. Focus of the delegates, the CJF president said, will be on priorities and concerns at home and abroad.
Additionally, Fisher said that the first of a series of key reports of the recently completed CJF Population Study–the most comprehensive census of American Jewry ever undertaken–will be made at the assembly. The reports will deal with intermarriage, use by Jews of services of Jewish agencies and other secular and non-secular agencies, and an overall demographic profile of the American Jewish community.
Of special significance, Fisher noted, will be the expected large turnout of university campus representatives and the introduction of special forums at this year’s assembly designed to deal with topics of broad delegate interest. More than 150 college students will participate at the Toronto assembly as official representatives of their respective communities and as full participants in the assembly program and deliberations.
