More than 18,000 persons attended the first Chanukah Festival here today at Madison Square Garden and purchased a total of $2,980,000 in Israeli bonds. The festival was arranged by the New York Committee for Israel Bonds.
Admission to the festival was limited to purchasers of Israeli bonds. Approximately half of the audience consisted of children. Highlights of the festival were the presentation of a Chanukah play telling in words, songs and dance of the Maccabee fight against the Syrian invaders of Judea about 2,000 years ago. The audience was addressed by Mayor Impellitteri and Dr. Israel Goldstein who urged American Jewry to intensify their purchasing of Israeli bonds.
