Nineteen Arab terrorists and two Jews were slain in nation-wide clashes today as the spreading British military dragnet caught some 200 terrorists in its toils and uncovered rebel headquarters in Samaria. Jews maintained essential services in Haifa in the second day of an Arab general strike.
Three battalions of British infantry conducting searching operations in Samaria found regional rebel headquarters at Silat Hartiya, completely equipped with arsenal and food stores, and made numerous arrests. Troops also surrounded and searched umm-el-fahm, northern village which has been the scene of spectacular Arab-British battles, killed a terrorist attempting to escape and arrested 27 others.
Another detachment engaged a band which attacked it from ambush near Ramallah. Eight terrorists were killed and four were wounded. Five bandsmen were slain and two were wounded in a clash with troops searching Mazra-ash-sharkia near Jerusalem. Three others were reported killed when a police patrol replied to an Arab band’s attack near migdal zedek.
Troops conducting day and night searches in the Arab seaport of Jaffa seized 20 terrorists. One house in the Manshieh quarter where bombs had been discovered was dynamited. In Haifa, strike-bound seaport city which is under 10-hour curfew from seven p.m., searches netted 75 Arab suspects.
Despite the British drive on terrorism, attacks on Jews continued. Benjamin Berman, 30-year-old immigrant from Poland, a watchman of the Shavei Zion colony, was ambushed and slain while acting as look-out for Jewish workers erecting telephone poles near Naharia. His pistol and ammunition were stolen. Before he died, however, he shot dead one of the attacking band.
A truck hit a land mine near the Herzliah colony, fatally wounding Zvi Manievitzki, 30, an immigrant from Poland, and seriously injuring Noah mishkofski, 28, and abraham krantz, 28, Lithuanian and Polish immigrants respectively. Two Jewish passengers were slightly wounded in an attack on a lydda-Jaffa train near Beit Dajan. The attackers were routed by the train’s police escort, suffering one casualty.
Importation of goods through the Gaza and Acre ports is henceforth prohibited, it was announced in the official Palestine Gazette. The Jerusalem Military Court sentenced to death five Arabs arrested on Oct. 10 with weapons in their possessions. Three other defendants were acquitted.
