A national employer-union salute honoring Edward J. Carlough, general president of the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association (AFL-CIO), which was held here last night, produced close to $2.5 million in Israel Bond sales. More than 1000 prominent industry and union personalities from all parts of the United States and Canada attended the event, which was sponsored by the union and leading management figures in the sheet metal industry, in cooperation with the Israel Bond Organization.
Sen. Henry M. Jackson (D.Wash.) and Simcha Dinitz, Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, were among the principal speakers at the testimonial dinner. In his address, Jackson stated that “people who have invested in Israel have invested in freedom.” He told the assembled group that all their efforts for Israel’s economic upbuilding have been repaid with solid achievement. The Entebbe rescue mission struck a blow for freedom throughout the world, he said, adding that it also has reaffirmed faith in Israel as a bulwark for democracy in the Middle East.
Dinitz, presenting the Israel Prime Minister’s Medal to Carlough, declared that Israel’s action in Uganda demonstrated that resistance to tyranny and to blackmail can succeed. George Meany; president of the AFL-CIO, in a congratulatory message to Carlough, praised the Sheet Metal Workers for supporting the State of Israel at a time of great decision for the young nation.
