2 Noted Violinists Plan Concert Tours for Refugees

Yehudi Menuhin hopes to raise a quarter of a million dollars for Jewish refugees through benefit performances that he will give in the course of a world tour on which he is embarking Feb. 24, his father, Moshe Menuhin, informed the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today,

Meanwhile, Mischa Elman will open, with a Carnegie Hall recital this Saturday, a three-month tour of 25 cities in the United States for the benefit of refugees of all faiths. The sponsoring committee, of which Alfred E. Smith is honorary chairman, will divide the funds equally among the American Committee for Christian German Refugees, the Committee for Catholic Refugees from Germany and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.

Yehudi Menuhin’s plans call for devoting several of his more than 90 performances in the largest cities abroad to the refugee cause, the proceeds. to be contributed to the Jewish refugee committees in the respective cities. It is hoped to raise more than $40,000 through a concert in Royal Albert Hall, London, on April 16. A performance is also being arranged in Amsterdam, and it is hoped to present others in Paris, Johannesburg, Melbourne, Sydney, and possibly later in New York.

“The proceeds will go for Jewish refugees only,” Mr. Menuhin said. “Although Yehudi has given plenty for the Earl Baldwin Fund and other funds, he feels that the Jews are the principal victims of Nazi brutality.”
