Some 2,000 delegates and guests to the World Congress for Yiddish Culture this week-end attended a special literary session and heard a review of the history and status of current Jewish literature by leading Yiddish poets, novelists and essayists in this country and abroad. An art exhibit, featuring the works of 90 Jewish artists and sculptors, was opened at the Jewish Museum tonight under the sponsorship of the Congress.
Earlier, Dr. Ernst Simon, fraternal delegate to the parley and a lecturer at the Foundation of Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, disclosed that the University plans to establish a chair in Yiddish soon. “All of us have begun to realize that Hebrew and Yiddish have a complementary function in the while framework of Jewish culture,” Dr. Simon said. “Recognizing this, the Hebrew University decided to establish a Chair of Yiddish Language and Culture. Reports were also presented by the executive secretaries of the Congress, Pinches Schwartz and M.L. Brown, dealing with the preparatory work for the Congress for the past year.
