More than 2,000 Jews, many of them natives of Italy and other refugees from other European countries, have escaped into Switzerland from Northern Italy, it was learned today. News of the escape was contained in a cablegram sent by Dr. Joseph Schwartz, European chairman of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, to the New York office.

The refugees, Dr. Schwartz said, are being maintained in an internment camp by the Swiss Government and the J.D.C. is providing them with clothing, medicines and other essentials. Most of the Italian Jews were residents of Milan and Turin in Northern Italy, now occupied by Germans.

The New York office of the Hias-Ica Emigration Association received a cable today from Dr. James Bernstein, its European director, stating that 1,500 Jews have succeeded in escaping from Nice, France, to Italy since the beginning of September. Many of these Jews have now reached Switzerland from Italy.
