Between 2,000 and 2,500 Jews have been arrested in a renewed campaign of mass seizures in Vienna, it was reliably reported here today. Women were among the victims for the first time, it was reported, but it was believed that most of the female prisoners were released soon after their arrest.
Meanwhile, all “Aryan” firms in Vienna have been ordered to dismiss their remaining Jewish employes within a fortnight. Instructions to this effect were sent out yesterday over the signature of the Nazi Gauleiter (District Leader) for Vienna, Odilo Globotschnigg.
Disaffection in the Austrian population was strikingly demonstrated by reports that Viennese women last night attacked storm troopers who were forcing Jewish women to wash an automobile. The attack occurred after a pregnant Jewess had fainted during the work. Police quelled the disturbance.
A delegation of the religious organization, Agudath Israel, took up with the councillor of the Polish Embassy here the situation of the Jews residing in Austria, whose status, they declared, is jeopardized by obstacles to emigration placed in their way by the Polish consular authorities in Vienna.
The delegation also called attention to the expulsion of German and Austrian students of religious seminaries in Poland by the authorities. The possibility of Poland’s supporting proposals of Jewish organizations for refugee-aid at the Evian conference was also discussed.
Sir Wyndham Deedes, army officer and former colonial administrator, supported an appeal for admission of a certain number of German and Austrian children to England. He addressed a meeting here.
