Over 2,000 German Jewish refugees have settled here and in Sao Paulo since the Nazi persecution of the Jews began, O Globo, Brazilian newspaper declared in a special article on the refugees.
The occasion for the article, which bescribes in detail the manner in which the new arrivals accustomed themselves to Brazilian life and the fashion in which they enhanced the life of the country, was the celebration carried out under the auspices of an association embracing all the refugees.
The celebration began with prayers in a local synagogue asking for a blessing on the Brazilian people and on Dr. Getullio Vargas, President of the Republic, for having accepted them in such a friendly fashion. The prayer was formally engraved on a parchment scroll for presentation to the Brazilian President.
O Globo also described in detail the Hitlerite persecution of the German Jews, which led to the ousting of thousands of Jews and forced them to emigrate to other countries.
