Jewish life in the United States for the last half-century was reviewed here today by prominent speakers at the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Jewish Daily Forward, held at the Madison Square Garden and attended by more than 20,000 persons. The celebration was marked also by a special 162-page edition of the Forward containing articles on all aspects of American Jewish life.
Principal speakers at the celebration included Abraham Cahan, editor-in-chief of the paper, Alexander Kahn, general manager, Harry Rogoff, managing editor, William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, and David Dubinsky, president of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. Messages of congratulations were received from President Truman, Judge Joseph M. Proskauer, president of the American Jewish Committee; Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, chairman of the American branch of the Jewish Agency and president of the Zionist Organization of America; Edward M.M. Warburg, chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee; Henry Morgenthau, Jr., national chairman of the United Jewish Appeal; Herbert H. Lehman, and other leaders of central Jewish organizations.
Arthur Hays Sulzberger, publisher of the New York Times, and T.O. Thackery, editor of the New York Post, were among the representatives of the American press who sent congratulations. The New York Times and the New York Herald-Tribune carried editorials lauding the role of the Jewish Daily Forward in Jewish life in the United States and in the Americanization of Jewish immigrants.
