More than 20,000 persons filled two meetings last night formally opening the Fall campaign of the Greater Boston United Jewish Appeal for $5,420,000. Several thousand men and women were turned away at the Boston Garden and the Boston Opera House when these two stadiums filled to capacity.
Henry Morgenthau, Jr., former Secretary of the Treasury, declared that the “work that remains to be done” for the displaced European Jews is still “enormous, overwhelming.” The highlight of the meetings was the reading of a message from Archbishop Cushing who sent a $1,000 check in behalf of the Catholic diocese of Boston. “I am sending this particular gift,” Archbishop Cushing’s message read, “as a symbol of the united sympathy with all your suffering people of the Catholic faithful for whom I am spokesman.”
