Immigration into this country during May and June will total 22, 000, instead of 16, 000 as previously anticipated. The revised figure was made known here yesterday after a meeting of the Jewish Agency executive., under the chairmanship of Dr. Nahum Goldmann, when the immigration budget was upped accordingly.
Five hundred European immigrants, most of them physicians, engineers, technicians and other professionals, arrived today. A shipload of 500 more is expected from Europe in the next two or three days.
Meanwhile, responsible authorities dealing with immigration problems said today they had heard nothing that would confirm a statement made last week by Prime Minister David Ben Gurion, who had said that chances may exist for possible immigration into Israel from the Soviet Union. It is understood, however, that some “additional countries” may soon open the gates for Jewish emigration to this country.
