The Joint Distribution Committee has raised $2,370,000 in the first six months of 1937 in its $4,650,000 campaign for overseas aid, it was reported today to a meeting of the campaign plan and scope committee at the office of William Rosenwald, co-chairman of the drive.
Cash and pledges to the J.D.C. amount to $2,370,000, which is 14 percent below the $2,750,000 which the committee has allocated in advance of collections, it was announced by Paul Baerwald, Rabbi Jonah B. Wise and Mr. Rosenwald, the co-chairman.
Joseph C. Hyman, executive director of the J.D.C. said that 1936 was a year of accumulated disasters for Jewish life abroad and that the devastation of Jewish economic life in pogromized districts of Poland had placed an unexpected burden on the committee.
Election of James N. Rosenberg as chairman of the J.D.C. National Council was announced by Felix M. Warburg, honorary chairman, and Mr. Baerwald. Organized in 1931, the council comprises nearly 1,000 Jews in various sections of the United States and Canada.
