Twenty-five Jewish graduates of United States Army, Navy and maritime training institutes will be commissioned in the next few weeks, the National Jewish Welfare Board reported here today.
A report of the JOB Commission on Jewish Chaplaincy revealed that eight Jews will be commissioned second lieutenants in the Army following their graduation from West Point June 4. At Annapolis, on the same day, 14 Jewish midshipmen will be commissioned ensigns in the Navy. Two Jewish midshipmen will be commissioned ensigns in the Coast Guard at commencement exercises May 27 at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, Connecticut, and one Jew will graduate from the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y.
Each of the Jewish officers will receive personally inscribed copies of the Bible from the JOB commission at special baccalaureate services arranged by Jewish chaplains at their respective academies. The presentations and services are part of the year-round programs at the academies provided by the commission, which is the officially authorized body for the recruitment of Jewish chaplains for the U.S. armed forces.
