Twenty-five Orthodox Jews were aboard an Israel-bound airplane today, as a guard of honor for the remains of the late Rabbi Aaron Kotler, world-famous scholar, who died here Thursday night and for whom funeral services were conducted on New York’s lower. East Side yesterday before massed crowds estimated by police at 25,000. The remains of the rabbi, who was 71, will be interred in Israel.
The services honoring the memory of the rabbi were conducted at an East Side synagogue facing a large square where several hundred policemen guarded the area and facilitated the vast, mourning crowd of pious Jews who venerated Rabbi Kotler. Among those inside the 500-capacity synagogue was Colonel Shlomo Goren, chief chaplain of the Israel Army. Mourners had come for the services from all over the United States.
