2,500 Attend Funeral Service for Judge Rothenberg; Sharett Represents Israel

More than 2,500 persons headed by civic leaders, representatives of every Zionist organization and major Jewish groups, and delegates from organized labor, gathered to pay their last respects today to Judge Morris Rothenberg, national chairman of the United Palestine Appeal at funeral services held in the Stephen S. Wise Free Synagogue. Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett of Israel and Arthur Lourie, Israel Consul-General in New York, represented the Jewish state at the services.

As a “tribute to his manifold activities in behalf of the Jewish homeland” five organizations which he led in the course of his lifetime joined to make the funeral arrangements: American Section, Jewish Agency; Jewish National Fund; Palestine Foundation Fund; United Palestine Appeal; United Jewish Appeal and Zionist Organization of America. Dr. Israel Goldstein, chairman of the World Confederation of General Zionists, who delivered the eulogy, declared that “Morris Rothenberg was a tower of strength in many a time of trouble, in many a storm and stress, in many a challenge and opportunity in the life of our people.” A message of condolence was sent to the Rothenberg family by the Jewish Agency executive in Jerusalem.

Rudolph G. Sonneborn, chairman of the board of the United Palestine Appeal and Ellis Radinsky, executive director, said: “The untimely death of Judge Rothenberg means a great and irreparable loss to the Zionist movement and the Jewish people. He dedicated his life and gave of his energies unsparingly for the welfare of oppressed and needy Jews throughout the world and for the cause of a Jewish homeland in Israel.”
