Stormy scenes occurred at the Zionist mass meeting here last night when an Arab attempted to create a disturbance. The meeting was addressed by Vladimir Jabotinsky, founder of the Jewish Legion and leader of the Zionist Revisionists, oppositionists in the Zionist Organization. The meeting, which took place in Bach Hall, was attended by an overflow crowd while more than 2,500 persons jammed the street in front of the hall clamoring vainly for admission.
When Jabotinsky referred to Lord Passfield, the former Sidney Webb, British Colonial Secretary, as “Passfield, Lord of Hebron,” (where the worst massacres during the Palestine riots took place) pandemonium broke loose, the gathering hissing and shouting at the mention of Lord Passfield’s name.
Jabotinsky, who was given an enthusiastic ovation, declared that “while England is not the only possible Mandatory Power, nevertheless it is necessary that a last attempt should be made for cooperation with Great Britain by making an appeal to the British people. This appeal must demand the carrying out of a greater Zionism by demanding that the promise for the establishment of a Jewish state which the Balfour Declaration intended should be carried out in the very interest of Britain.”
The present situation, the Revisionist chieftain declared, was caused because the Zionist movement had denied the principles of the Jewish state and of creating a Jewish majority in Palestine. This defeatist attitude of the Zionist Organization encouraged the British government to “publish the dastardly paper,” Jabotinsky said, denying, however that this new White Paper was establishing an iron wall against Zionist work.
