Plans for a large-scale building program, to cost $25,000,000, coupled with the recruitment of outstanding scholars for an expanded faculty, were announced here today on behalf of Tel Aviv University by Dr. George S. Wise, the new president of the university.
The university’s new campus, he said, will open next fall. New buildings will accommodate 2,000 students in the humanities and sciences, while 1,000 other students will still have to attend classes in the older, makeshift quarters around the city. The expanded building program, however, Dr. Wise said, envisages the construction of 21 buildings, costing $25,000,000, over the next five years, providing space for 10,000 students and a faculty of 1,000.
Dr. Wise said he had been in touch with 350 to 400 Israeli scholars who have done their doctoral and post-doctoral studies in the United States. Some of these men, he said, are earning salaries ranging from $15,000 to $25,000 a year now, but would be willing to return to Israel at much lower salaries if they were provided with research facilities as well as living quarters. In Israel, he noted, these scholars would be willing to accept the standard salaries paid to university faculty men here, ranging from $3,600 to $4,300 per year.
