A group of 265 Jewish refugees destined for the United States and other countries is among the 1,000 American and other foreign nationals now leaving China after being evacuated this week by special train from Shangnai to Tientsin, it was made known here by Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee.
The refugees, most of whom fled to Shanghai in the 1930’s to escape the Nazis, were cared for by the J.D.C. Their departure was made possible by the International Refugee Organization and the J.D.C. In the refugee group, 115 men, women and children are scheduled to remain in the United States, according to Mr. Leavitt. Another group of 118 will be repatriated to various European countries, while 23 are bound for South America and nine for Canada. The departure of the refugee group, Mr. Leavitt said, still leaves about 800 Jewish refugees in Shanghai.
