The Palestine Government was considering today what to do about 269 Jewish refugees from Europe aboard the Rumanian steamship Assandu which was halted by the Coast Guard yesterday and detained at Haifa. The ship had been wandering in the Mediterranean for 18 days since it sailed from Constanza when the Coast Guard stopped it in Palestine waters, off Caesarea, on suspicion that an attempt would be made to land the refugees illegally. The ship’s food and water supplies were exhausted. The refugees aboard, most of when were from Rumania, included 50 women and children.
