Approximately 2,800 Arabs separated from their families by the war have applied to the Israel Government for permission to rejoin their families in Israel, officials announced today. Twenty-five hundred applications came from Arab refugees in Syria and Lebanon, 60 each from Transjordan and Egypt, and the remainder from the Arab-held parts of Palestine.
The Israel-Transjordan exchange of territory in the Wadi Fukin area will be effected at noon on Nov. 2 when Israel will obtain possession of an important strip of land near Bethlehem in exchange for the Arab village. Meanwhile, Israel handed over 11 prisoners of war to the Transjordan Army in Jerusalem.
The Arab mayor of the Old City of Jerusalem failed today to persuade members of the Christian clergy in the Arab quarter to send a congratulatory message to King Abdullah of Transjordan because of his opposition to the proposed internationalization of Jerusalem. Most of the clergy abstained from attending the meeting called by the mayor, while others who did attend said they were without authority to express an opinion on the question.
