Some 28,000 students in all of Israel’s institutions of higher learning went out on strike today over a decision by the Government to raise the uniform nationwide tuition fees from 600 pounds ($200) to 700 pounds ($233) annually.
The walkout was viewed with surprise here in view of the fact that the students had already agreed to an increase of 60 pounds ($20), only 40 pounds ($13) short of the Government figure. In Jerusalem, where most Hebrew University students were out on strike, students of the Bezalel School of Art and the School of Pshyiotherapy joined in the strike. A group of students at the Hebrew University, however, organized a demonstration against the strike.
In Haifa, several thousand students gathered on the campus of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology carrying posters protesting the stationed guards near the entrances of the institution to prevent “strike-breaking” students from entering the buildings.
