There are three Jews among the four winners of the $25,000 prize for the best symphonic work by an American which was offered by the Victor Phonograph Company, according to the announcement made public by Mr. Shoemaker, president of the company.
The prize was originally promised for one symphonic work, .but the judges had difficulties in deciding which one was the best of the submitted manuscripts and deserved the prize. They therefore decided to divide it among the five best compositions, giving $5,000 for each one.
The winners are Ernest Bloch, Louis Gruenberg, Aaron Copeland and Robert Russell Bennet, the latter having received $10,000 for two of his submitted manuscripts.
