Arab raiders and snipers added three Jews last night and today to the mounting death toll in the current disorders.
Two Jews were killed and a third was seriously wounded this morning during an attack on the Jewish cooperative settlement of Ein Shemer, near Karkur. The dead were David Schneider, 28, of Poland, and Dov Hendel, 30. Kolman Sitner, 28, was removed to a hospital in a critical condition.
Arab snipers fired into a group of Jews strolling on the beach at Acre, killing Ephraim Zilberman, 31. His three companions escaped unhit. Ari Schulman, 40, a special policeman, was seriously wounded when Arab snipers fired into Tel Aviv suburbs during the night.
Two Arab terrorists were reported to have been killed by Jewish special policemen when they were ambushed while patrolling a road near Motza. Uri Orshanski, 18, a member of the patrol, was slightly wounded. A Jewish special policeman who was killed yesterday near Gan Yavneh was identified today as Itzhak Habercorn, 19, a resident of Gan Yavneh.
A Greek monk and his brother, kidnaped Aug. 24 from a monastery near Cesaria, were found dead last night near Tulkarem.
Judge Mustopha Bey Khalidi, a member of the Palestine Supreme Court, today became Mayor of Jerusalem, taking over the duties performed by Acting Mayor Daniel Auster, a Jew, since exile last October of Mayor Hussein Khalidi, a relative of Mustopha Bey. Appointment of an Arab Mayor has stirred resentment among Jerusalem’s Jews, who comprise a majority.
