Thirty congressional candidates from New York agreed yesterday that the United States must maintain Israel’s strength through continued economic and military support in order to thwart Soviet attempts to dominate the Middle East. The 30, who are seeking election or re-election to seats in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives next month, attended a meeting of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee here. A spokesman for the committee said later that a “substantial number” of the candidates favored outright grants of economic aid and gifts of military equipment to Israel instead of loans and sales. Attending the meeting were New York State’s three senatorial candidates, Charles E. Goodell, the incumbent Republican, Richard L. Ottinger, Democrat and James L. Buckley, the Conservative Party candidate. The three agreed that the Soviet Union must be held responsible for truce violations by Egypt in the Suez cease-fire zone. Sen. Goodell scored the Nixon Administration for protesting the violations “merely to a deputy foreign minister in Moscow.” Mr. Ottinger warned that the Mideast constituted “the greatest threat to world peace today.”
