Thirty members of the House of Representatives, of both political parties, paid special tribute to Israel on the floor of the House today with many calling for an end to Arab appeasement by the Administration. The occasion for the speeches arose when Congressmen sought and received permission to comment on Israel’s ninth anniversary of independence.

House Democratic Leader John W. McCormack of Massachusetts lauded Israel as a reliable ally of the free world. He described the Administration policy as “pro-Arab” and suggested that Egypt’s President Nasser might have grown stronger and closer to Russia because of weakness in U.S. policy. Rep. Charles Boyle, Illinois Democrat, charged that “the State Department has consistently and deliberately sought to evade its commitments to Israel by favoring the Arabs on every occasion.” He said “the Administration has done less than its share in protecting Israel from Egyptian aggression and discrimination on the seas.”

Rep. Thomas M. Pelly, Republican of Washington, told the House it “behooves members of the United Nations, including the United States, to end the provocation from Israel’s neighbors and to guarantee her borders against attack and invasion.” A New York Democrat, Rep. John Rooney, said “whatever inroads Communism may make into the Middle East under tyrants and dictators, we may rest assured that Israel will remain our staunch friend and Communism’s dedicated enemy.”
