The late Dr. Joseph H. Hertz, Chief Rabbi of the British Empire, was buried today in Willesdon Cemetery, after services at the St. John Wood Synagogue, which were attended by more than 3,000 persons. Foreign Minister Bevin sent a message of condolences to the Chief Rabbi’s Emergency Council, which Dr. Hertz headed.
It was revealed at the services that Rabbi Hertz was preparing to appear before the joint Anglo-American Inquiry Committee on Palestine. Among the mourners were many British Jewish leaders including Lord Nathan, Sir Robert Waley-Cohen and Aaron Wright. The entire London rabbinate and many provincial rabbis attended the funeral.
