Three thousand Jewish families in the city of Macau, Moldavia, have been ordered by the Rumanian authorities to prepare for deportation to Transnistria, the Axis-occupied part of the Ukraine administered by Rumania, reliable reports reaching here today stated.
This is the first order for the mass-deportation of Jews from the section known as Old Rumania. Hitherto the Jews were deported chiefly from the provinces of Bessarabia and Bukovina. Immediately following issuance of the deportation order the Rumanian authorities threw a police cordon around Macau to prevent individual Jews from leaving for other cities. The entire population of Macau, Jewish and non-Jewish, is about 30,000.
A cabled report received here today from Kuibyshev, from Jewish refugees who fled from Bessarabia after the re-occupation of that province by mixed German-Rumanian troops, confirms the report that 83-year-old Chief Rabbi J. L. Zirelsohn was executed in Kishinev. The execution took place on a public square and the body was left lying on the square for several days, the report says.
