In a cold rain and hail which swept the historic Horse Guards Parade grounds, a crowd of 30,000 persons today watched 8,500 Jewish war veterans participate in the seventh annual Jewish Ex-Servicemen’s National Remembrance Parade and services in honor of the Jewish war dead.
Forming in the square, the veterans were inspected by Field-Marshal Lord Milne, former Chief of the Imperial General Staff. They then
marched to the Cenotaph, where Lord Milne took the salute from the base of the monument. Lieutenant Leonard Keysor and Private Jack White, holders of the Victoria Cross, laid a wreath “In memory of the British Jews who died in the Great War” at the foot of the monument.
Re-entering the Horse Guards Parade through the Admiralty Arch, the veterans formed on three sides of the square for religious services. Dr. J. H. Hertz, chief rabbi of the British Empire, and Rabbi Dayan M. Gollop, senior Jewish chaplain to His Majesty’s Forces, officiated. The service included the reciting of the memorial prayer, sounding of the “Last Post” on the bugles and a moment of silence.
The services were broadcast throughout the British Empire.
