More than $300,000 was contributed here yesterday to the United Jewish Appeal drive at the combined UJA Southland Regional Conference and New Orleans Jewish Welfare Fund kick-off dinner.
Twenty-six Jewish communities in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia and northwest Florida made the contributions. Speakers at the dinner included Robert Ainsworth, Jr., Acting Governor of Louisiana; Victor Shiro, president of the New Orleans City Council; George Jessel, and Capt. Joshua L. Goldberg, highest ranking Jewish chaplain in the Navy.
