A total of 30,137 Jewish children are presently attending schools operated by the Alliance Israelite Universelle in Morocco, it was reported here today by the American Friends of the Alliance. The report emphasized that this represents a 50 percent increase over the attendance five years ago.
At the same time, it was announced that additional classes were opened recently by the Alliance for girls, who now number 49 percent of the total enrollment in the Alliance schools. This is considered particularly significant since previously girls had been denied any education in the Moslem areas. The number of students in the Alliance schools in the entire Mediterranean area, including Israel, is today over 50,000.
