A total of 1,100,000 pounds sterling ($3,080,000) was raised here last night at the annual Joint Palestine Appeal dinner. The leading gifts came from the Sieff and Sachar families, contributing 200,000 pounds ($560,000); 75,000 pounds ($210,000) from Sir Isaac Wolfson; and 50,000 pounds ($140,000) from an anonymous source.
The principal speakers at the event were Major General Chaim Laskov, Israel’s former Chief of Staff, who now heads the new Israel Port Authority; and Israel’s Ambassador here, Arthur Lourie. Sir Isaac, as chairman of the campaign announced that this year’s JPA goal is 3,000,000 pounds ($8,400,000).
