A total of 1,145,000 pounds ($3,206,000) was raised at the annual dinner of the Joint Palestine Appeal here last night.
J. Edward Sieff, who presided, reported that more than 2,000,000 pounds ($5,600,000) was raised in 1962 and that the dinner pledges represented the first time that the 2,000,000-pound total had been exceeded. He expressed the hope that the total would top the 3,000,000-pound ($8,400,000) mark this year.
The principal speaker was Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, the American Zionist leader. Other speakers included Israel Ambassador Arthur Lourie, Hyam Morrison, Joint treasurer of the JPA, Rosser Chin, president of the British Jewish National Fund, and Sir Barnett Janner, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews.
