A considerable number of Jews are standing as candidates for all three parties in the general elections which take place at the end of this month. Most of them belong to the Liberal Party, whose leaders include Sir Herbert Samuel and Lord Reading. Nearly as many are standing for the Conservative Party, among them two members of the present government, A. M. Samuel, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, and Sir Philip Sassoon, Under-Secretary of State for Air. The Labor Party candidates also include one Jew of prominence, Emanuel Shinwell, who held office in the Labor Government.
The Liberal candidates include Sir Herbert Samuel, Major H. L. Nathan, P. A. Harris, L. B. Franklin, L. Freedman, M. J. Landa, H. B. Mackover, C. Picciotto, E. A. Straus, S. Teff, Philip Guedalla, Marcus Lipton, W. E. Baron, Major L. Hore-Belisha, Lt. Col. C. Waley-Cohen, S. Philips, H. G. Liverman and S. I. Cohen.
Three of these. P. A. Harris, E. A. Strauss, and Major Hore-Belisha, were members of the Parliament.
The Conservative candidates include M. A. Samuel, Sir Philip Sassoon, Samuel Samuel, Sir Walter de Frece, Major J. B. Brunel-Cohen, and Major Isidore Salmon, all members of the present House of Commons, and also Messrs. S. Gluckstein, L. H. Gluckstein, M. Samuel, H. J. Solomon and M. Bloch.
The Labor candidates, among them two sitting members, Mr. Shinwell and Colonel Day, include in addition Dr. C. E. Spero, L. Spero, G. R. Strauss, J. H. Baum and M. Marcus.
