At least 35 West Bank Arabs have been detained during the past 24 hours following the seizure of documents at terrorist headquarters in Beirut raided by Israeli commandos Tuesday. Security sources indicated that more arrests could be expected. According to one source, the seizure of the documents now under study by the security services may have served to prevent attacks and sabotage planned by the terrorists to coincide with the celebration of Israel’s 25th anniversary on Independence Day. It was learned that an undisclosed number of Israeli Arabs living in northern Israel were also detained as a result of information gleaned from the captured documents.
The seizure of the documents was disclosed yesterday by Chief of Staff Gen. David Elazar. Security sources said the suspects detained so far were for the most part young people who had a high school education and relatives living in Jordan or Syria.
