Commenting on the severe economic stress in the Hauran district of Syria, local newspapers report that some thirty to thirty-five thousand Hauranis have immigrated to Palestine as a result of the depression. Within the past few months, the papers add, large sums of money, aggregating £40,000, have been remitted to their families left behind in Syria by the Hauran immigrants, who are experiencing a mild sort of prosperity since settling in the Holy Land. Some have even sent for their wives and children.
Another 10,000 Jebel Druze farmers of Syria have migrated to Palestine because of similar economic conditions in their native land, it is stated.
In addition, thousands of Egyptians and Transjordanians are slipping across the Palestinian border illegally. The High Commissioner of Palestine is reported to be taking action against the illegal entrants. He has ordered that an enumeration be taken of the non-indigenous Arabs working in Palestine who are suspected of entering the country unperceived within recent months.
