Grants of $4.2 million to the Associated YM-YWHAs of Greater New York were announced last night at the organization’s 15th annual meeting. Sidney J. Silberman, Associated Ys president, disclosed the contributions and pledges that are to be use in part for building projects to include the Block Vacation Center for the Aged at Poyntelle, Pa., which will serve 750 New Yorkers in its initial summer season beginning in July.

Funds will also be used for the construction of new community centers and the expansion and modernization of existing ones. Both new and current programming activities, catering to all age groups, will also benefit by these grants to the Associated Ys Endowment Fund. A member agency of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, and participant in its current Building Fund Campaign, the Associated Ys operate 10 community centers, in addition to summer camps, that totally serve over 50,000 members of the New York and suburban communities each year.

At the dinner meeting, Benjamin S. Hornstein, a veteran of over 60 years of service to the nation’s community center movement, was honored jointly by Federation and the Associated Ys. New York attorney, Milton B. Eulau, who served as Associated Ys president from 1967 to 1970, was the recipient of the organization’s Dorothy L. Bernard Award. A Certificate of Commendation was presented to Graenum Berger, who is retiring later this year after 41 years of service in the community center field. Berger has been the Consultant on Community Centers for the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies.
