Forty Viennese Jews who survived Nazi concentration camps arrived at the main office of the Joint Distribution Committee yesterday to thank the rescue organization formally for aid in the years following their liberation a quarter-century ago. Carol Lazar, a Dachau survivor now in his seventies who serves as vice president of Vienna’s Jewish community, represented the delegation. He noted that the Austrian Jewish population, which totaled 190,000 before the 1938 Anschluss, was now 12,500. Samuel L. Haber, JDC Executive Vice Chairman, said nonetheless that Vienna can be proud of “a Jewish community rising from the ashes of the holocaust.” The 40 Viennese will be on tour in New York and Washington, D.C.
