Four thousand tailors, members of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union, have entered the second week of their strike for better working conditions. Hopes for an early settlement are not bright. Picketing continues, with about 125 firms affected.
The local clothing industry is disturbed on two other fronts. The women garment workers are still threatening to go out on strike unless the manufacturers make concessions. Negotiations are being carried on between officials of the International Ladies Garment Union and executives of the manufacturers’ association.
The International Fur Workers Union is also taking a strike vote which will affect some seventy-five local furriers. Pietro Luechi of New York, international president of the fur workers, has been carrying on negotiations on behalf of the union. The fur workers seek higher wages and recognition of the international union.
