An audience of about 40,000 attended the annual “Music Under the Stars” concert presented tonight by the American Fund for Israel Institutions at Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field. A total of $115,000 was raised at the concert for the American Fund.
Abe Stark, president of the New York City Council, in whose honor the concert was given, lauded the work of the American Fund for Israel Institutions. Mayor Robert F. Wagner presented him with a plaque on behalf of the American Fund. From the City of Tel Aviv came another tribute in the form of a scroll presented by Israel Consul Reuven Dafni, which “tenders warm appreciation to him in recognition of his many years of effort on behalf of cultural and educational institutions in Tel Aviv through the American Fund for Israel Institutions.” The scroll was signed by Chaim Levanon, Mayor of Tel Aviv-Jaffa–Israel’s largest metropolis.
The chief beneficiary of the concert this year will be the Tel Aviv Cultural Center (Fredric R. Mann Auditorium). This modern 3,000 seat hall, now under construction, has been designed as a focus of cultural, educational and artistic activities, including youth programs, forums, seminars, art and educational exhibitions, and as a new home for the world-renowned Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to the Orchestra, the American Fund supports many of the leading cultural and educational institutions in Israel, research institutes for language and literature, museums for art and archaeology, schools for religious youth training and others.
