40th Jew Killed in Ambush; Hill Region Under Curfew

Arabs today ambushed a bus convoyed by soldiers between Tiberias and Rosh Pina, killing one Jew–the fortieth since April 15–as bombings, sniping and sabotage continued throughout the country.

Troops guarded the hill region after rebels had attempted to damage exposed water-pipes at Latrun and other mains supplying Jerusalem. Strict curfew was imposed in the hill sector covering 27 kilometers to Tel Aviv.

Arabs attacking a train near Hartuv on route to Jerusalem were routed by an army flier who circled over the rebels and raked them with gunfire. Police drove off rebels who fired on linemen repairing damaged telephone wires between Jericho and Jerusalem.

Troops repelled a fierce midnight attack on Jewish-owned groves at Ekron near Rehoboth by Arabs who fired from all sides. Special Jewish police held off the invaders until military reinforcements arrived. A band of thirty to forty Arabs damaged a grove near Afuleh, according to an official communique.

About 2,000 trees were uprooted in groves between Herzlia and the American colony of Raanana during the night.

Two powerful bombs were discovered under a bridge between Tel Aviv and Ramat Gan. Explosion of a bomb on Mount Carmel caused slight damage. Other bombings occurred at Beersheba, Migdal Gad, Jaffa and Petach Tikvah.

Sniping on soldiers were reported in several points.

Crops valued at $750 were sequestered by the authorities in the Arab village of Sebastia as collective punishment for terroristic acts. Two Arabs were arrested for possession of bullets. Under emergency regulations they face death or life imprisonment.

The municipal council of Tel Aviv sent condolences to the Seaforth Highlanders’ regiment on the death of Sergeant Henry Mills in an engagement with Arabs Sunday. Despite previous reports, it was officially established no other soldier was felled in the battle.

Two Arabs captured by troops with a cache of arms and ammunition last night in a cave in the Nablus hills near the scene of Sunday’s engagement faced death or life imprisonment under emergency regulations.
