Four hundred and fifteen of the 924 refugees living in the Emergency Refugee Shelter at Ft. Ontario have already been resettled in 54 communities in 15 states by social workers of the National Refugee Service and the National Council of Jewish Women, it was announced here today.
In addition, a new group left for the Canadian border yesterday, another will leave tomorrow, and the last two will depart on Saturday and next Tuesday. Approximately half of the refugees already settled are in the New York area. This group consists of 219 persons in 129 family units. Another 196 people in 93 family units are scattered throughout fourteen other states.
At a meeting held in Syracuse, N.Y., the coordinating committee for the entire project was dissolved. Represented on the committee were the National Refugee Service, HIAS, the National Council of Jewish Women, and the ORT. Approximately $250,000 was spent in a year and a half by these national organizations to finance the religious, educational, vocational, and recreational program at the emergency shelter.
