The Ministry of Labor published a study today demonstrating that a widespread belief that most of Israel’s slum dwellers are immigrants from Oriental countries was inaccurate.
The study showed that 42 percent of slum dwellers had emigrated from Europe, and a similar percentage from Asia and Africa. The remainder were Israeli-born. The survey also showed that more than half of the slum dwellers seemed resigned to their conditions and many were satisfied with those conditions.
The survey did not give data on the number of Israelis living in substandard housing. But a Government study, made more than a year ago, listed about 25, 000 Jewish families living in insanitary and overcrowded housing.
