Mayor Robert F. Wagner today proclaimed this week “Jewish Conciliation Week” in honor of the 45th anniversary of the Jewish Conciliation Board of America as a free court of arbitration. The anniversary also marks the 35th year of Dr. Israel Goldstein’s presidency of the Board.
In his proclamation, Mayor Wagner paid tribute to the Jewish Conciliation Board as “a unicue organization, serving as a free court of arbitration, which has combined the wisdom of the Torah, the authority of the law and the compassion of humanity in rendering its decision in many thousands of cases.”
A special anniversary program will take place next Sunday at the Educational Alliance building on the lower East Side, where a street sign bearing the name “Conciliation Square” will be affixed to the corner of East Broadway and Jefferson Street, marking the site of the Conciliation Board’s headquarters for more than three decades. Guest speakers will include Associate Justice Simon E. Sobeloff of the U.S. Court of Appeals; Dr. Goldstein; Dr. Leo Jung, rabbi of the Jewish Center; and Dr. Julius Mark, rabbi of Temple Emanu-El.
