The twenty-second annual meeting of the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society of America (Hias) to be held on Sunday afternoon, March 1st., at the Hotel Astor, will resolve itself into a commemoration of fifty years of Jewish immigration into the United States.
In 1881 the first large Jewish immigration from Eastern Europe into the United States began, as the result of the persecutions to which East European Jewry was subjected. The work of the Society began almost at the same time.
Mr. Abraham Herman, the President of the Hias, will speak on fifty years of Jewish immigration and will make a number of recommendations in regard to the future work of the Hias.
The principal speaker will be Sir Wilmot Lewis, the Washington correspondent of the London “Times”. Congressman La Guardia will speak on the present trend of immigration and its relationship to America.
A statement on three years of work in finding new immigration lands for Jewish immigrants undertaken by the Hias in conjunction with the Ica and the Emigdirekt will be made by Mr. Isaac L. Asofsky, the general manager.
