Five hundred rabbis will participate tomorrow in a quiet, dignified demonstration appealing “to the new rulers of the Soviet Union to restore religious and cultural rights to the 3,000,000 Jews” in the USSR, it was announced here today by Rabbi Max Schenk, president of the New York Board of Rabbis. The Board is composed of more than 800 Orthodox, Conservative and Reform rabbis of this city and vicinity.
Gathering near the headquarters of the Soviet Mission to the United Nations, Rabbi Schenk said, the procession will march to the United Nations Plaza, then convene for a meeting in the auditorium of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, opposite the UN enclave. Following the meeting, the rabbis will march to the Soviet Mission, to present a petition on the subject of religious and cultural freedom for the USSR Jews.
