Believed to be students from the University of Montreal, 500 youths paraded through Montreal’s East End last night shouting “Down with Jews” and “Down with Communists.”
Raoul Rainville, law student, and principal speaker at the demonstration, which was finally broken up by police, declared that French Canadians must attack “the cursed Jews” on whom a war without mercy had been declared by students.
They must particularly oppose Jewish members on the City Council, he said. The meeting, attended by 1,000 spectators, concluded with the declaration read by Rainville and repeated by the audience, as follows:
“I promise solemnly that I shall never under any circumstances buy from a Jew.”
No casualties were reported, although a Jewish shop-window was smashed by the demonstrators. Police Inspector Arthur Maranda warned that similar parades would not be tolerated.
Leaders announced plans for another parade on Armistice Day.
